One Man Aims to Unite a City One Ear at a Time

Lee puts a sign representing the city of Washington D.C. near his old home in a black middle class neighborhood in Southeast D.C.
I wanted to share this fantastically written article with you guys and encourage y'all to support my cause by checking out my album The Inauguration in January. Check this one out. Shouts out to Chris for this one!!!

Written by Christopher Thomas (December 2010).

The city of Washington D.C. has waited for an artist to open doors for the city's lucrative underground music scene. That artist may very well be a 23 year old hip-hop recording artist and producer with a plan to unite and help to create a better image for the city, but how does he plan to do this where others have failed? Read on and find out what he says. The Inauguration will be released January 1st, 2011. For information on this artist please visit: www.bestnewrapper.blogspot.com, www.day1pro.com or email day1pro@yahoo.com or mayorbrianlee@gmail.com.

District of Columbia local rapper, "Mayor" Brian Lee sits down very carefully in a very comfortable looking computer chair with a grin as excited and eager as it is painful to wear on his face. The recipient of 8 screws with wires to bound his jaw shut seems as upbeat and energetic in person as he is angry and inquisitive in many records and as thoughtful and funny as he pokes jokes at his entourage about having to smile for a month due to the jaw bracing.

His intentions are genuine and simple; he wants to serve as a liaison between three distinctly different but equally focused types of underground hip hop in the area: The raw and rough gangster and street music lovers, the youthful crowd into fashion and dance trends and also the older generations of fans who still love lyricism and creativity while also speaking to different generations of music lovers beyond the borders of the Potomac River, and the Eastern, Western and Southern Avenues. How can he accomplish this? "I'm going to be me. I am all those crowds in one man so as such I wanna speak to ALL my people about what's real and also give them a way to enjoy themselves with a touch of home during these hard times and help to usher in better times for this city. It's not about me being a G moving [kilos of cocaine] or being a pretty boy and singing through an autotune." says Lee with his teeth barely shifting though each articulation of word. His city accent is barely noticeable though the young man was born in D.C. General Hospital and raised in impoverished areas in the southeast quadrant of the city as well as  Montana Terrace a former housing project in the Northeast quadrant during the 90s before moving to the Benning Heights area in his teens, " I have good looking clothes; sometimes preppy looking clothing but I will jone on you and tell you some real stuff that's going on the streets while I'm looking preppy and politic with you about serious issues in our community and world in a pair of Nike Boots and a diamond watch when I'm not"

Known formerly as Tha 1ne, Lee landed himself in with the Diamond District Cartel (not to be confused with Diamond District, a current D.C. group), a label affiliated with local street gang 501 Boyz which claimed to have distribution through Sony Records but also was distributing in other areas. After the incarcerations of top members, the label itself slowed down and is now seemingly defunct, an experience that motivated Lee to found and lead his own imprint P.L.U.T.O Urban Entertainment and eventually land with Day 1 Productions and secure physical distribution as well as join the ranks of Island Def Jam Music Group's Digital Distribution group. In 2009 he released his iTunes debut, New Kid featuring another known D.C. rapper, Tabi Bonney.

His experiences from meeting and performing with major artists including Ryan Leslie, Disturbing the Peace Records, Trey Songz & D.C.'s Don Juan as well as local favorites Critical Condition Band, Whitefolkz and other figures such as major A&R's and music promoters has prepared him for the high stakes game of politics and chance that is the music industry and his experiences in the streets of the unseen side our Nation's Capital as well as the more aesthetically pleasing walks of his school, The University of Maryland Eastern Shore has shaped Lee into a future hit maker none deprived of potential and the will to turn that potential into dollar signs for investors and open doors for supporters and enthusiasts.

That potential has spawned two street albums with a studio album debut coming January, simply titled, "The Inauguration". The street albums "Thrillionaire" and "The Bulletproof Boomboxx" represent Lee's dynamics with "Thrillionaire" being an upbeat street inspired release alongside "The Bulletproof Boomboxxx" released three weeks prior for free download on Bandcamp, a grittier more thought provoking look at Lee's life and also struggles with drug abuse and depression. A third release is planned for release a week prior to the release of, "The Inauguration" which releases January, 2011 and Lee plans to release material every three weeks into the spring of 2011. His releases as well as a low budget video shot for one of the album's singles, "Kamikaze," are currently creating a buzz on the Internet and on the streets of the city as well as the release of "Clap" a go-go/hip hop fusion featuring the T.O.B go go band from Washington D.C. and Nollo Dice, a member of Lee's hip hop group the Council.

The cover of The Inauguration is a subtle message displaying gang colors and the infamous gangster "flag"over Lee's face and the U.S. Capitol building as well as the American flag behind him. Politics of the industry and the street are at power on this album.

When asked about the efforts of major artists such as Wale, Lee smiled and said, "I respect what Wale is trying to do and support that 100% but we as a city cannot put everything on his back and expect him to carry us. We gotta jump down and help him carry that load because he's not just Wale, he's our brother in this DMV thing. The same goes for Tabi, Don Juan and whoever is out there doing big things from the metropolitan area. At the same time, make no mistake we are all competition and every time I make a record I'm aiming for my stuff to be better than everybody else's stuff friend or foe"

The city may very well have a new star on it's hands. For more information about Mayor Brian Lee, P.L.U.T.OWorld Music Group, or Day 1 Productions please e-mail:

A Tip for all Aspiring Rappers: How Radio Works

Shout out to all the DMV stations in the area giving our artists oppurtunities. I just wanted drop a throwback article about getting radio plays and whatnot. It's a good read for all of us aspiring artists, hear me?
 How Radio works
by Mike King (Published Dec. 2007)

In a perfect world, radio stations across the country would play songs based simply on the merits of the songs themselves. In a perfect world, a major radio station in a major market could be solicited in the same fashion as a publicist solicits Rolling Stone, for example: by sending a package, making a follow-up call, and if the “deciders” (in the case of radio, the program directors) like what they hear, they would promote the record by playing it on air. Unfortunately this is not how large traditional radio stations work.
Traditional radio is (still) a big business, and there is a HUGE promotional vehicle behind any song you hear played on commercial radio. (commercial radio is a term used to describe the dominant form of radio in the US and several other countries, those that are broadcasting for profit.) The amount of money and resources it takes to get your music played on commercial radio during peak listening times makes it an unrealistic avenue to almost all independent artists and labels.
The good news is that there are a number of noncommercial traditional radio stations that are a completely viable outlet for a musician that does not have a spare $500,000 to drop on a commercial radio campaign. (noncommercial radio is a term used to describe those stations that are not funded by advertising, typically located on the left side of the radio dial.) Additionally, commercial stations often times have specialty shows that fall outside of the regular programming that are open to less expensive solicitation. Furthermore, the rise of online and satellite radio have further opened the doors to independent artists and labels, and provided another avenue for artists who aren’t on major labels to get national/international radio coverage.
Let’s take a step back and talk about what needs to be happening with your band before you consider radio support.

When Should You Consider Radio Support?
Traditional terrestrial radio (as opposed to online radio, which has its own set of rules) should be the last consideration in an independent artist’s marketing campaign for a few reasons. First, it can be incredibly expensive. Second, there are fewer spots available to promote new artists than there are at other marketing outlets (like press, retail, online, and touring), which makes it incredibly difficult to get play during the time of day when folks actually listen to the radio (as opposed to placement at 3 a.m.). Third, and most importantly, radio is best used to support other efforts you already have in place—in particular, a tour.
For example, say you are a New York City-based band, and you’ve hired an indie radio promoter, and they’ve secured radio play at KUSF, a great noncommercial station in San Francisco. Without a tour in that market, without records in the stores in that market, and without press visibility, the radio play will not really do you much good. That being said, there are some folks (independent promoters, usually) that feel that radio play should come before a distribution deal, as it can be used as a “promotional ammunition” to sell the distributor or a label on the merits of your band.
While there is some truth to this, distributors these days are just as impressed by a solid online community, great press, and a band that can draw a good amount of folks to their shows nationally. Radio on a national level is a more expensive and generally a less effective avenue if your goal is to impress distributors or label folks. A national radio campaign should not be considered the “magic bullet” to kick-start your career or marketing campaign. However, depending on where you are with your career, your fan base, and your general visibility, some degree of radio presence can help to propel your visibility into larger arenas.

NAPPY HEADED HOES DON'T GET PLAYED AT 3 PM.
What Else Should Be in Place Prior To Considering Your Radio Campaign?
To truly capitalize on a radio promotional campaign, both at noncommercial and commercial radio, it’s best to have your integrated marketing campaign running on all cylinders. Radio is designed to complement your other marketing efforts and make the listeners take action. To start, you’ll need to have your Web site up and optimized with tour dates, any press you’ve had, bio, etc.
If folks hear about you through a local specialty radio show and are intrigued, chances are they’ll search for you online. Again, touring, press, a distribution campaign, and most importantly a GROWING fanbase should also be in place before you undertake your radio campaign. It make the radio pitches a lot easier if you (or your radio promo indie, to be more specific) can point out that a buzz happening with your campaign—but you also need to have these other segments in place so that folks hear your music, find your music in stores, and find out where you’re playing,
In addition, if you do decide to undertake a radio promotion campaign, you are going to need to budget for creating and sending a number of promos (promotional copies) of your record to your target stations. This is a serious consideration for an artist on a limited budget.

The Bulletproof Boomboxxx is Avaliable for FREE?! It must be X-mas...

The cover has me in front of a panoramic shot of my home city with a blunt in my mouth, bullets bouncing off of and coming towards my boomboxxx and a musical spaceship from Pluto coming down. These the things that being high does.

It's been out nearly a month and in total about 250 people have this first real album from me... Now in the big picture that's not a lot at all but I'm promoting it pretty much solo with no cash coming in or going out (this is one of those word of mouth deals, ya digs???) and honestly I'm just pleased that people take the time to listen to my shit. Well anyways, I'm reintroducing it for any of you newbies, so check it out. Actual thought went into this free project and I don't want anything but your ears (and ladies, maybe your rears... to shake to these tunes). This is, The Bulletproof Boomboxxx:

Yeah moe, check me but please don't disrespect me. This is the video for Kamikaze (so far). Low budget, ghetto, shabby... call it what you will but don't forget to add inventive to the mix. You will notice my jaw is wired shut throughout the video but no I'm not imitating Mr. West. I decided whilst I was healing from a broken jaw of my own (Another story for another time) I'd might as well do something productive and learn video editing. It's my first time( not like the whole virginity thing, I didn't stick my dick in my laptop (and no my first time time I put my wee wee in a vagina not a computer- WOOOOOOOOOO!!! Fuck eHarmony. (I will get bashed for that but so what, bitch?). Also are clips from the upcoming movie The Green Lantern so make sure y'all take y'all asses to see dat jointand bootleg it for me (Sony can sue me for dat but as evidenced by the video they won't get much legitimate money from me- WOOOOOOO!!!!) So I hope y'all enjoy but if you don't let your voice be heard. What do you think?

Q: So what the f**k happened to Loud-Pack.com?

A: I shut that shit down.

When I designed and launched www.loud-pack.com I had a vision which I discussed with a partner and it never panned out and I ended up basically re-running the same type of site for mainly my own use. So yeah, I killed it and launched this simple blog site to save those green guys that live in my pleather wallet and eliminate a lot of confusion. Yeah, it was a nice site but honestly, it barely had any traffic unless I dedicated big time to force feed it down people's throats. So welcome to the main site to see whats going on wit ya nigga. Hopefully in the future I can relaunch the site and have it be what is was intended to be.
